Modern Standby (connected standby)
A Windows low-power mode where the device stays on with the screen off. The Desktop Activity Moderator only loads, and records, on hardware that supports it.
Modern Standby, the successor to Windows 8's connected standby, is a power model in which a device stays in a low-power on state with the screen off, similar to a phone, instead of entering traditional S3 sleep (Microsoft Learn). Desktop apps are paused or throttled during that state.
It matters for forensics because the Desktop Activity Moderator is only loaded when the platform supports connected standby. An empty dam key on a desktop without Modern Standby is normal; a populated one hints at a laptop or tablet. See DAM forensics explained.
